The Company - Areté Innovations Inc.
Areté Innovations Inc. was founded in 2002 by three people who enjoy people,
thrive on challenges, and believe that succeeding in business just cannot be that hard! We take pride
in the fact that we are "straight shooters" who believe in honesty, integrity, and "good,
old-fashioned" business principles.
 The Name - Areté Innovations
The name of our company comes from the ancient Greek word areté.
It
is pronounced "r-uh-tay", with the emphasis on the last
syllable.
The most articulated value in Greek culture is areté. Roughly translated
into english as "virtue," "goodness," or "excellence," the word actually means something closer to "being the
best you can be," or "reaching your highest human potential." The writings of ancient Greek philosophers
like Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle introduced us to the word, and the Greek writer Homer further popularized it.
Since the time of Homer, the term has not been gender specific. In the Homeric poems, areté
is frequently associated with bravery, but more often, with effectiveness. The man or woman of areté
is a person of the highest effectiveness; they use all their faculties...to achieve real results.
According to the Greek historian H.D.F. Kitto, Areté implies
an all-round excellence, and was a dominant value in Greek life
for hundreds of years. Mr. Kitto explains the Greek value of areté this way:
Their (the Greeks) ideal was not a specifically
knightly idea, like Chivalry or Love; they called it areté - another
typically Greek word. When we meet it in Plato we translate it 'Virtue' and
consequently miss the all the flavour of it. 'Virtue', at least in modern
English, is almost entirely a moral word; aretê on the other hand is used
indifferently in all the categories and means simply excellence. It may be
limited of course by its context; the aretê of a race-horse is speed, of a
cart-horse strength. If it is used, in a general context, (the areté) of a man will
connote excellence in the ways in which a man can be excellent - morally,
intellectually, physically, practically. "
